Girl Develop It Philadelphia

I am a member of Girl Develop It Philadelphia and as someone who wants to get into technology, it was one of the best things I ever joined.

The tech field is notoriously white male dominated and the mission of Girl Develop It is trying to change that ratio. They sponsor many classes and events, including many that are on this blog. The group – which is found on Meetup – is also great for a place to network and learn from others on what it takes to be a success in the field. I’ve been able to fill up my LinkedIn page with connections who are relevant to my chosen field. I’ve been able to run into people I’ve met before and it’s always nice to find a friendly face when I go to a tech event now.

As of this writing, I have been to 6 so far- I always look forward to more!

Poem Excercise from HTML class at Women’s Coding Collective

I took an online HTML class from the Women’s Coding Collective. For this excercise, we were supposed to design something that had:

  • A title
  • A main heading
  • Text of the poem
  • An image or two
  • A link to the poet’s website, Wikipedia page, or a similar resource
  • A bulleted list of tidbits about the poem (e.g., nationality of the poet, year it was written, references in pop culture, etc.)

AND This is what I came up with!
Monday’s Child

Monday’s child is fair of face,

Tuesday’s child is full of grace,

Wednesday’s child is full of woe,

Thursday’s child has far to go,

Friday’s child is loving and giving,

Saturday’s child works hard for a living,

But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day

Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Poem fun things:

  • First recorded in 1838 and collected by James Halliwell-Phillipps, who was born in London.
  • Monday’s Child Wikipedia page
  • “Friday’s Child” (1967) is an episode of the original Star Trek television series. The name of episode seems to come from the poem.

LadyHacks 2016

During the weekend of April 15 -16 of 2016, I attended LadyHacks once again. This time the women’s only hackathon was held in Northern Liberties. This was a great experience as I learned about tech by helping to develop an app. I also was able to do some networking as well. It is always a blast and I hope I always have the opportunity to go.

During the event, I joined a team which was developing an app called Minerva Priorities. Minerva Priorities took its name from Harry Potter and it wants to help someone organize their tasks. Ideally, a person who would be overwhelmed would go on their phone and pull up the app. Then the user would be able to sort their to-do list into to “must do”, “want to do” and “it can wait”

I put my writing skills to use and was responsible for the Wiki area of the Github:

During the weekend of March 6 -7, I attended LadyHacks, a women’s only hackathon in University City. This was a great experience as I learned about tech by helping to develop websites. I also was able to do some networking as well. It was a blast and I highly recommend it!

During the event, I joined a team which developed a website from scratch that was devoted to research about women who go into college for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields.

Here is what we worked on. I was directly responsible for the slide designed with a US map on it.
